Happy Birthday Henry with the Magnetic Personality
What is the opposite of “resistance” ?
Inductance … which we measure in “henrys”.
And if Joseph Henry had been quicker on the draw and published first – then maybe we would be measuring capacitance in “josephs” rather than “farads” after Michael Faraday … the guy who published his findings first.
Henry was the first Secretary of the Smithsonian Institute –
A real American Scientist born on this day in 1797 and lived 80 years.
He lived most of his life and passed in Washington DC in 1878 … 80 years !
This was obviously when actual intelligent people lived in Washington DC
What was Joseph Henry’s main contribution to science ? Himself (in my opinion)
And of course his discovery of self-inductance
… a wacky-weird thing that happens with electromagnetism.
Fun to do at parties with a bunch of Dr Who fans around …
Without harnessing the electromagnetic principle of self-inductance there would be NONE of our electric contraptions we rely on today … NONE … maybe some battery operated gadgets … Thomas Edison would actually appear to be smart if that were true …
Thanks to Joseph Henry – you can listen to your stereo, use a suck-broom on your floor, use a radio and basically use anything that plugs into a wall socket …
He didn’t “invent” the wall socket – he discovered how to get the power to the socket basically …
Look up what a TRANSFORMER is … and what INDUCTANCE is …
Class dismissed …
