Breaking the Speed of Sound

Growing up in the ’60s in northern Florida, it was common to hear sonic booms from fighter planes from the Air Force bases that were some distance away.
Not long after, they were forbidden to break the sound barrier except for over the Gulf of Mexico.
I can vividly remember the awesome sound. So deep and pure. So very powerful.
I didn’t know then that one could actually see the effect. It happens in a split second like the beat of a massive heart.
