Drawn Into the Art of John Singleton Copley

| May 29, 2011

Master artist J. S. Copley ( 1738 ~ 1815 ) is best known to those who study art as among the first American artists to utilize props in his portraits in order to better illustrate the subject’s personality.

I am drawn into his painting by his use of light and shadow. I find myself wandering into his paintings in how he bleeds the images into the backgrounds and shadows. He would have been a brilliant cinematographer if he had not come in the time he was born.

We must all work in the mediums we have available.

An amazing rendering of Paul Revere –

Copley’s use of props is simply wonderful !

Even Copley’s SELF PORTRAIT speaks of his mastery of shadow –

Of course his full subject paintings are something to be marveled upon –
