In the Midst of Mind Numbing Post Production
…
Hello friends –
WOW !~ Mastering interview clips for a feature documentary is not unlike the tedious stress of studying for exams in engineering school … days blur together … sleep is only when passing out is the only option … shaving and baths take a back seat … meals are skipped … absolute focus on the task at hand is the only thing that exists in the universe …
So on a blurry Sunday morning, I surface for air to read some of the Good Book for inspiration, eat an egg or two and find some activity for an hour to keep from complete insanity.
So here is my diversion for your pleasure –
I decided to view some pieces from one of my most favorite modern directors, Spike Jonze …
Spike Jonze was one of those pioneering video directors from the 90s that has gone on to direct big films. In his case it is “Where The Wild Things Are” which I haven’t had the time to see …
But it is his early stuff that is most brilliant when he was doing music videos and ads for various hip products.
Case in point – When I was doing my big radio show in the 90s, A band called Weezer came out. This video was a brilliant work that took a 70s TV situation Comedy, shot some contemporary footage on a reconstructed set with the band along with rehired original cast members while cutting in the old footage …
Brilliant – yes ?
Yes …
Another brilliant idea was in this Fatboy Slim video which used actor Christopher Walken in a way that defied the going trends of MTV music videos …
Brilliant again – yes ?
Sure …
And then he was able to land a feature film … it was “Being John Malcov … Malcomvit… ” … oh – how the heck is it spelled anyway !?!
So this makes me laugh because I know EXACTLY the pressure the poor guy is under … not that I have yet had the call to do a Hollywood feature as yet …
But some dude wants to interview him as he is in the beginning of post production on the feature … he gets him in the car for the interview …
Poor Jonze is feeling the pressure from the Hollywood suits and it finally gets to him –
WARNING – this ends a bit gross !
Poor dude … such pressure on a young director …
I like this mid-90s “interview” much better as Jonze treated it more like a spoof of himself –
It is such a shame we creatives have to finally grow up …
Not it’s back to work … thankful as my Production Manager made me some breakfast …
Live busy … have fun … work hard …
