Time Capsule – 1980 Presidential Campaign & Election

The late 70’s was very similar to our time today.
History (and more) travels in cycles and patterns. We seem to live long enough to recognize some of them. Those in the fashion and arts industry can definitely testify to trends running in around 15 and 30 year cycles.
The following clips are television spots for the 1980 Presidential Campaign. They are followed by election night as well as the day of inauguration which was a very interesting moment in history for America –
The last clip is the last minute drama on the last day of Carter’s Administration when Reagan was sworn in as President of the United States of America –
American hostages were held in Iran for well over a year. Upon the day of Reagan being sworn in, the Iranians released the hostages only after Carter, in a desperate attempt to have history show that he had negotiated the release, transferred a large sum of money being held from the Iranians.
However, the American hostages were not released until Ronald Reagan had actually been sworn in.
Why was Carter unable to negotiate their release before? Why did the Iranians hold the hostages at the airport until they knew Carter’s Presidency was indeed finished?
Was it the impending Presidency of Reagan that convinced the Iranians to release the hostages out of fear that Reagan would have taken real action against Iran?
