Waiting for the Bird to Cook

| November 22, 2012

I had a brilliant idea –

… mainly because we do not have a full, metal covered oven container like Great Granny had … which is 650 miles away … a real antique!

And so we cannot do the super secret family recipe from the 1800s turkey cooking method that is absolutely the best and completely fool-proof no matter how big the bird …

We are doing the 500 deg for 1/2 hr and then 350 deg for the remaining method on the flat rack … stuffed with apple, sweet onion, melted butter rosemary / garlic cavity insertion … so far so good … outside brushed with a mixture I concocted with butter and special seasonings …

But I digress …

Even the dogs are happy today :-)

I am surprised at how many people think that Lincoln was responsible for Thanksgiving as a national holiday !

It was Sarah Hale –

Yes … Lincoln finally signed a proclamation – after being deluged with letters from Sarah in the same way the Old Testament widow bugged the judge over and over until he gave in just to not see her again …

Sarah Hale already spent 40 years writing thousands of letters to get Thanksgiving as a national holiday … while Lincoln was still splitting rails in short pants …

BTW – I was looking forward to the new movie headed by Spielburg with Daniel Day Lewis playing Lincoln to come out – until I saw the trailer !!!

I cringe every time they say “the man who brought us all together” … UGH !~!!!!

Why are divisive characters in history always claimed as “Moses-like” when they were actually the total opposite ?

Anyway … Thanks Sarah !

I was up early and made my honey almond snacks … and we did a lot of munchy stuff … now the ham awaits its final coating and bake as soon as the turkey gets done …

I miss the fresh Apalachicola oysters …

A standard for Thanksgiving day for the men-folk to do outside while the ladies gossip in the kitchen … I know of several get togethers down in swampland which are pigging out on that red-neck sushi

Love it and miss it … maybe next year …
