Peter Jackson at 48 fps

| December 14, 2012

48 frames per second ?!?

That’s supposed to make the new version of 3D look more “realistic” …

Gimmicks …

Passing fads … Like YOYOs / MySpace / Facebook / transfat / stuffing phonebooths / granola / tree hugging / Disco / Marxism / Etc …

Hollywood should try making actual STORIES like used to be made. Back when they understood that “Movies make stars / stars do not make movies.”

If you need an explanation of why film runs at 24fps … how the brain smears images together we see … hit your favorite search engine …

Images look better with a degree of blur … It is a fascinating subject to talk about aperture vs shutter speed vs film exposure ratings … but that’s like a entomologist at a party after a few glasses of Orvieto Secco debating about red ant superiority as opposed to black ants … Or Porche’ mechanics debating the split drive shaft technology of BMWs from the 1970s … BOOOORRRRING !!! (unless you are a car poindexter)

Matter of fact – “Saving Private Ryan” action was brilliant being show with a very high shutter speed … wide angle lenses (a-la Kubrick) and desaturated color … the audience sees it – and thinks it’s cool … but has no idea why … but that’s art – not gimmics …

But I digress …

I’ve been told you have to make sure to bring a BARF BAG to the newest version of The Hobbit … like a badly designed roller coaster.

What an exciting life Peter Jackson is living ! Big expectations from fans and the studio – think of the budget he has for Malox

Just as director Peter Jackson started out huge – then went mega skinny – he’s back again !

been there –

done that –

… still can’t make a movie shorter than 3 hours and a half …

Everyone is apologizing for the beginning …

“It starts off really slow – but once it gets into it … it really moves along !”

You mean – like Peter Jackson’s “King Kong” ?!?

It is amazing to me that an action film can actually put someone to sleep but Peter Jackson knows how to do that as a fine art.

Like the King Kong scene with the giant hornets … or were they bees ?

It is really cool for about 2 minutes … then it goes on … and on …. and on … and on … and on … and onnn … ad nauseum …

Sort of like the drum solo in “INAGADDADAVIDA”
by Iron Butterfly …

I remember what a very famous drummer told me – that he doesn’t put people to sleep with a 20 minute solo – he does a 90 second solo that the audience will NEVER forget …

I still like the Rankin and Bass version best …

40 minutes of a great pace !

And Orson Bean as Bilbo to boot !

Just goes to show you that 2D animation can BLOW AWAY several hundred million dollars of production out of Hollywood.

HEART always beats FLASH

But that’s just how it goes – in the ancient Roman or this Modern Roman society … no matter how many Christians are fed to the lions this week – you have to double the carnage next week to keep a jaded audience awake.
