I’m Fascinated by Shipping Containers

| January 22, 2013

Ever admire something from afar?

Like seeing a travel show about Tahiti and wanting to go there – but never get the time or can justify the cost of a trip there.

I’ve been that way for a long time with adapted shipping containers.

I’ve seen pictures from time to time.

I’ve looked at web sites … scribbled down some ideas … ever admiring from a distance.

Around the early to mid 90’s, I became absolutely fascinated with “retired” shipping containers after I met a shirt maker who bought two full sized retired shipping containers to store his stock.

They were surprisingly clean on the inside with sturdy wooden floors.

They were also more air tight and shut out the weather better than a brick house.

I wondered then if they could be used as “building blocks” in order to build structures to work in and maybe even live in.

That was the engineer in me thinking out loud ….

Back then, my friend bought the pair of containers for a few hundred dollars. Now they are going for much more since there seems to be a large craze of using them for building today.

Still – they are sure an inexpensive alternative to traditional building materials.

Sheesh … I sound like a tree hugger … !

I’ve been seeing homes built with them that no one would even guess they are built from shipping containers.

That’s a good thing, indeed.

The best aspect to me is durability and also being easy to maintain as well as keeping down problems with mold and humidity.

My dream dwelling built from shipping containers would be to turn four of them on their ends at the corners in a pseudo-castle layout.

There would be a drive under the main floor to park cars.

That would be really cool …
