No More Movie Film ~ Drive In Movies are In Trouble
35mm film prints are finally being phased out completely !
The problem is for the theaters still hanging on to their film projectors.
Especially the Drive-In theaters …
Bloomberg has a very interesting article about the transition to digital.
Yep ! There’s still quite a few of those around the country.
Even in Canada they are concerned about the immediate future of the Drive-In Theater once film prints are phased out this year. It’s a real economical problem.
I sure remember the drive-in theater when I was a kid in the 60s.
It was a real event to go there. We usually did once a week.
My dad worked at the Drive-In back in the 50s.
The new documentary feature I’m in post-production with right now draws a lot on that era.
Even though the new feature documentary set is about early drag racing and car culture on the 40s/50s/ and a little into the 60s – it has a lot about the Drive-In movie subject.
Digital technology is absolutely fantastic ! I couldn’t do my work without it. Post-production is fun today with digital tools. It allows creativity to flow.
There are some things that digital just can’t do better. But with film, it’s the best way to go.
I like nostalgia and big machines – but I always hated cutting film. It’s a real pain.
And think of the tremendous expense to deliver all those heavy cans of film to theaters all over the country.
Distributing and delivering movies were a real logistical burden to deal with – and I remember seeing the trucks zooming around delivering the films for that week.
(I believe it was the Benton Brothers in Florida)
Yet – I do feel the theater’s pain – because they have to buy new, expensive digital projectors.
I’ve got a great idea – look up the closest drive-in theater to you and go see a movie there before they are gone.
