Submariner Movie ~ Post-Production News

| July 22, 2011

The post production on “Submariner: The Men of the Silent Service” is coming along very well.

As with any project, (especially a feature film) it has taken over our lives and dictates everything we do in an almost obsessive fashion.

This is indeed a very special film.

I cannot tell you what an honor it has been interviewing these great men. The stories they tell and the personal stories and insights they gave me off the record are so very priceless.

There are among the list of submariners from several eras of Navy service in the movie, Sheppard Jenks, who was the navigator on the USS Nautilus for Operation Sunshine on the mission to be the first to cross the North Pole via nuclear submarine.

The Movie is centered on the men who served on submarines. There is a lot of submarine hardware but this film is first to reveal the men and the personalities that made history as well as what life is like on a submarine. It is riveting, revealing and simply hillarious in some cases.

It was unfortunate for me to learn that Frank Holland, one of the more fascinating people in the movie has passed on. I am so thankful we had the opportunity not only to meet him but to record some very vital information, insights and stories only he could tell.

Frank Holland was on all attempts to pass the USS Nautilus under the North Pole in Operation Sunshine.

He was also responsible for the first letters mailed from the North Pole on that trip. He personally made the cancellation stamp that was used as well as involved in the design of the commemorative stamp. These are now in the Smithsonian and National Postal Museums.

But most important, he gave us complete details of the first Atlantic side attempt to cross under the north pole by the Nautilus. The story is absolutely riveting and has been untold in such detail until now.

Most people believe and history books record that there were only two attempts from the Pacific ocean side – but there was one initial attempt the year before from the Atlantic Ocean side. This was a most amazing story that nearly ended in tragedy and you will be able to hear it first hand in the movie.

Until it’s release in a few months, here is a glimpse at the poster.

This is the preliminary design –

Look for the Movie on DVD soon !
