In this fast paced world ~ try rediscovering Chess
I am constantly bombarded these days with Skylanders, and more blasting video games via my teenage daughter’s Wii console …
I have to confess that I also have a past life with various fast paced computer games such as Doom, Wolfenstein, Vice City and the like.
I have always gravitated toward cockpit racing games and those “grab a gun and shoot ’em up” type games. Nothing like taking a break from work to blast a few Nazis …
What fun ! They are short vacations when I need to “clean the pallet” of the mind when fatigued with post-production.
However, I tripped over the latest chess edition that came with a Windows 7 computer. ( I do not think I will be embracing Windows 8 ever … due to still tasting the rotten flavor of Windows Vista, DOS 4 and even back to DOS 3.1 )
I set the difficulty level down to a point where I win about half the time. The computer wins about half the time and then sometimes forces a draw which hits me quite funny like I’m playing HAL 9000 … !
My mind now gets transported back to the 5th grade when STRATEGO first appeared on the market and the other game of choice was CHESS …
However, chess is relaxing while also challenging.
It seems to work a part of the brain that is dormant from normal tasks as well as tasks that are part of every day work.
Chess does something that today’s computer gaming blistering level fast ambidextrous mental tasks require.
It requires thoughtful strategy.
I find it is very relaxing.
Try rediscovering it as I have. You can burn through a game in a short time.
I hope you will also discover the satisfaction I have. Mentally and even physically. It also seems to do the spirit a good turn.
Expletives are optional – but can also be therapeutic.
