Chuck at Mach 2.43 in 1953

| December 12, 2012

It happened on this day in 1953 …

US pilot Chuck Yeager took the experimental X-1A to Mach 2.43 and reached 90,000 feet !

All did not go smoothly –

Inertial coupling caused Yeager to loose control – as the craft pitched, yawed and rolled, it fell 51,000 feet in 51 seconds until Yeager pulled it out at 29,000 feet – then landed safely.

Americans have always been best at pushing the limits.
